Through a remarkable series of events, St. Irene came to be tasked with coordinating a ministry of our Church to men incarcerated in the Texas state prison system (yes, Texas.....long story). We sponsor mission trips by our clergymen to visit these inmates, who have been baptized into the Orthodox Faith, in order to offer them Confession and Holy Communion, and we also send a small stipend to several of the men every month, so that they can purchase necessities that the prison does not provide, such as a little fan to relieve their misery in the 100 degree Texas summer heat (yes, no air conditioning!) and fasting food from the commissary to supplement their diet that becomes restricted when they keep the Church fasts.
